Huw
Stacey graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2000. He has
had an interest in animal behaviour since before he went to university,
and he has been performing behavioural consultations at Thameswood
since he started working here in 2004.
Huw has completed the Diploma in companion animal
behaviour counselling at the University of Southampton, which is
regarded as the most comprehensive behavioural qualification available
in the UK.
Many animals with behavioural problems have concurrent
medical conditions, and by combining medical, surgical and behavioural
knowledge Huw can provide a truly integrated service. He also has
a good knowledge of modern training methods, and uses these to demonstrate
the behavioural modification techniques such as clicker training
and desensitisation that are the cornerstone of behavioural therapy.
A good example of a condition requiring an integrated
approach is a lick granuloma – this is a common problem seen
in dogs where they lick an area of skin so much that it may get
sore, thickened and infected. Thoroughly investigating a lick granuloma
can involve anaesthesia, radiography, soft tissue surgery, cytology,
bacteriology and pharmacology as well as a behavioural consultation.
Treatment may involve surgery, behavioural and environmental modification,
medication, training and pheromonotherapy.
