Senior Health Clinics

We all wish our pets could live longer and, at Thameswood, we love our senior animals, but we also know how challenging it can be looking after them. This is one of the reasons we have created our senior health clinics which are run by our experienced nursing team.

As your pet gets older (just like us!) they are more likely to develop chronic conditions which can be picked up with routine screening. We aim to support and provide as many options as possible for your older pet to have the healthiest senior years they can.

We have developed a package to provide an up-to-date clinical history, as well as diagnostic testing to pre-empt clinical signs of disease. Indeed, some may already have mild clinical signs which could be significant or treatable.

The consultation consists of a 30-minute appointment whereby a Senior Nurse will go through a detailed history with you about your pet and perform a nose-to-tail examination. You may wish to have information for end-of-life planning or you may opt out of this discussion.

Ideally, we ask that you collect urine the morning of the appointment and bring it with you- we have specialist urine collection kits you can collect from reception as part of the package, prior to the appointment.

The nurse will the carry out:

  • Blood pressure check
  • Urine tests
  • Blood sample for full profile (including Thyroid for cats)

All using our ‘fear free’ and ‘cat friendly’ practices.

The nurse may discuss some of the findings but is unable to provide any diagnosis during these consultations. Once all information has been gathered and samples obtained you will be free to leave. Your nurse will then be back in contact within 7 days to inform you of any findings and recommendations.

If any abnormal results are found the case will be referred to a Veterinary Surgeon and you will be invited to a 15minute consultation to discuss the results and any new diagnosis made and treatment if appropriate. The Veterinary Consultation will be offered half price (usually £48.00 but £24.00 post Senior Check)
